Glorious October has arrived! The cool weather is creating river fog that covers the cemetery each morning at the top of the hill. All around us falling leaves are turning tinted shades of red, yellow, and orange; covering the streets; clogging the gutters. We have to bundle in jackets as the cooling air starts blowing in the premature darkening of the summer sky. The heavy rains are drowning the world outside; we're warm in the house eating the crisp honey apples in the caramel dip. I think it's the best time of year.
We have bought the girls their Halloween costumes -- Lulu is going to be a vampire, dressing in a flowing black dress, with a jewel encrusted choker, webbed high back collar, fangs and boots. Red is going to be a forest fairy. She' ll be wearing a green / purple fanciful dress, wings, floral crown, and carrying a wand. Both are dying to play in their costumes, but we told them they had to wait until Halloween.Saturday was the Giant Pumpkin Festival. The weather this year made the day uninviting outside, the wind howled, but was fun none the less. The girls rode ponies, went on a hay ride, wandered through a spook alley made of hay bails, raced through a hay maze, and in all, had a great time. Don't forget the giant pumpkins, the biggest of which weighed 1408.5 lbs this year. Next weekend I think we'll go to a pumpkin patch and pick our soon to be Jack-o-Lanterns out of the fields. -CRW

Does anyone else think those huge pumpkins look like those really fat people you see on Oprah or Entertainment Tonight that haven't left their houses, not to mention their beds, in years? For some reason I feel just as guilty as looking at them as I would a freak show.
